Omani company, Menagen Pharmaceutical Industries and Korean company, Chong Kun Dang Pharmaceutical Corp (CKD), have formed a strategic partnership to provide biosimilars to countries in the Middle East.

The partnership, which was announced in July 2021, will allow the export of CKD’s Nesbell (darbepoetin alfa), an anaemia treatment biosimilar, to six countries in the Middle East: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Darbepoetin alfa is a synthetic form of erythropoietin. It stimulates erythropoiesis (increases red blood cell levels) and is used to treat anaemia, commonly associated with chronic renal failure and cancer chemotherapy [1]. The originator product is Amgen’s Aranesp, which was approved in the US and Europe in 2001.

CKD’s Nesbell, was released in Korea and Japan in 2019 [1, 2]. It was co-developed by Japan’s Kyowa Hakko Kirin and the US’s Amgen. It is a second-generation anaemia biosimilar therapy and, compared to the first generation of drugs, the treatment significantly reduces the frequency of drug administration by using genetic engineering techniques.
