The drug is a generic version of Pfizer’s combination high blood pressure and cholesterol treatment Caduet. Dr Reddy’s gained US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for it abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) for generic amlodipine/atorvastatin on 7 March 2014.
Caduet (amlodipine/atorvastatin) tablets combine the calcium channel blocker amlodipine besylate with the HMG CoA-reductase inhibitor atorvastatin calcium. The drug is indicated in patients for whom treatment with both amlodipine and atorvastatin is appropriate.
Amlodipine is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of heart attack and strokes. Amlodipine is also indicated for the treatment of coronary artery disease. Atorvastatin is indicated in addition to diet for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol.
